Wilhelmsburg – eine kulinarische Reise über die Insel

{:de}Wir lieben unsere Insel. Es ist der Ort, an dem wir unser Label Bridge&Tunnel gegründet haben. Und der Ort, der uns täglich inspiriert. Wilhelmsburg ist nicht nur die zweitgrößte Flussinsel der Welt. Es ist auch ein sehr inspirierender Ort, wenn es um die Vielfalt Hamburgs geht. Die Insel ist grün und ruhig. Aber das bedeutet nicht, dass es hier nicht viel zu entdecken gibt. Wilhelmsburg hat eine Vielzahl von schönen Restaurants und Cafés. Hier kommen unsere Tipps, um einen gesamten Tag die Insel zu entdecken – besonders die Speisen und Getränke in diesem Teil der Stadt.

 

Frühstück

Knusperkeks

Startet euren Tag mit einem Frühstück im Knusperkeks. Das Café ist zentral im Reiherstiegviertel in der Veringstraße gelegen und wahnsinnig gemütlich. Unter der Woche könnt ihr hier bereits ab 8 Uhr (eine Stunde später am Wochenende) euer Frühstück genießen. Ihr könnt euch euer individuelles Frühstück zusammenstellen oder a la carte essen. Knusperkeks ist ein großartiger Ort, um Freunde zu treffen. Es lässt sich dort aber auch prima allein aushalten.

 

Kaffee

Energiebunker

Nach dem Frühstück könnt ihr in einem der schönsten Cafés Wilhelmsburgs – auf dem Dach des Energiebunkers – Kaffee oder Tee genießen. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs bot der Bunker den Wilhelmsburgern bei Angriffen Schutz. Heute befindet sich im Bunker ein Kraftwerk, das erneuerbare Energie erzeugt und damit wieder den Bewohnern der Nachbarschaft dient. Auf dem Bunker, in 30 Metern Höhe, befindet sich das Café Vju. Das Café ist nur am Wochenende geöffnet und ist der perfekte Platz, um die besondere Aussicht über die Insel zu genießen. Nach dem Café lohnt sich eine Führung durch den Bunker, um mehr über die ereignisreiche Geschichte des Kraftwerks zu erfahren.

 

 

Lunch

Cukur Tost

Wenn ihr zum Lunch bereit seid, solltet ihr unbedingt das Cukur Tost aufsuchen. Am Vogelhüttendeich gelegen, bietet das Café an 6 Tagen in der Woche ein superleckeres Mittagessen an. Ihr könnt zwischen 3 oder 4 wöchentlich wechselnden türkischen Gerichten wählen und teilen – oder die ganze Köstlichkeiten für euch behalten. Vor der Eröffnung des Cafés war der Inhaber in der Medienbranche tätig. Und benannte sein Café nach einer berühmten türkischen Fernsehserie. Er wuppt den Laden ganz alleine und verwendet dabei nur Produkte aus der Region. Das Café hat begrenzte Sitzplätze, sichert euch also rechtzeitigen einen der begehrten Plätze.

Cafè Pause

Nach Lunch kommt? Genau, Kaffee und Kuchen. Und das Café Pause der perfekte Ort dazu. Das Café ist etwas versteckt in der Honigfabrik, dem Kulturzentrum der Insel. gelegen. Hier trefft ihr auf Eltern mit Kindern, Studenten und Rentner, die allesamt Kaffee trinken und die Gesellschaft der anderen genießen.

Abendessen

La Patina

Hat die Tour über die Insel euch hungrig gemacht? Dann ist jetzt der perfekte Moment, um im La Patina eine leckere Pizza zu genießen. An der Veringstraße gelegen, bietet das Restaurant eine große Auswahl an Pizzas, auch vegetarisch und vegan, sowie Salate. Wenn ihr selbst kreativ werden wollt, könnt ihr euch die Pizza auch nach eurem Geschmack zusammenstellen. Ihr könnt es euch im entspannten Ambiente der Location gemütlich machen oder den Take away Service nutzen.

 

Aomame

Wenn Pizza nicht euer Ding ist, besucht das Aomame. Das kleine japanische Restaurant ist 6 Tage die Woche geöffnet, von spätnachmittags bis 22 Uhr. Es ist zentral gelegen an der Veringstraße. Die Gründer des Restaurants haben eine starke Verbindung zur japanischen Kultur und Küche. Kommt unbedingt vorbei, wenn ihr bei szeniger Atmosphäre Dumplings, eine Poke Bowl oder ein leckeres Ramen schlemmen wollt.

 

Drinks

Turtur

In den Wintermonaten fungiert das Turtur als Club und ist ein super Ort zum Ausgehen. Es gibt eine Vielzahl an Parties zu unterschiedlichen Themen und mit unterschiedlicher Musik. Zum Beginn der Sommersaison im Mai verwandelt sich das Turtur in ein Restaurant mit Pizza, Salaten und Getränken. Die Bar bleibt aber bestehen und gelegentlich gibt es auch Konzerte. Der perfekte Ort, um eure kulinarische Reise durch Wilhelmsburgs mit einem Drink zu beenden!

It is also a very inspiring place when it comes to the diversity of Hamburg. The island is green and calm. But that doesn’t mean that there is not much to do here. Wilhelmsburg has a variety of nice restaurants and cafes. These are our tips to spend a day discovering the place – especially the  food and drinks in this part of town.

 

Breakfast

Knusperkeks

Start your day with breakfast at Knusperkeks. The café is centrally located and has a cosy atmosphere. During the week, you can enjoy your breakfast here as early as 8 AM (an hour later during the weekend). You can put together your custom-made breakfast, using the menu on the table. Knusperkeks is a great place to go to with friends. But you can also visit the café by yourself. Just bring a book and enjoy your meal!

 

Coffee

Energiebunker

After breakfast, you can enjoy some coffee or tea at one of Wilhelmsburg’s most scenic cafes, located on top of the Energiebunker. During the second world war, the bunker offered the inhabitants of Wilhelmsburg shelter during attacks. Today, the bunker contains a power plant that generates renewable energy, serving the inhabitants of neighbourhood yet again. Café Vju is located on top of the bunker, at 30 meters altitude. The café is only open on weekends and offers the perfect place to sit down and enjoy the view. Once you have finished your drink, you can join a guided tour through the bunker and learn more about the power plant.

 

 

Lunch

Cukur Tost

Once you are ready for lunch, you can make your way to Cukur Tost. Located on the Vogelhüttendeich, the café offers delicious lunch six days per week. Choose three or four of the Turkish dishes and share (or keep all the deliciousness for yourself). Before opening the café, the owner had a career in media. He thus named his café after a famous Turkish tv-series. The owner manages the shop all by himself, using products from local shops only. The café has limited seats, so it is small, yet very cosy.

 

Coffee

Cafè Pause

If you are craving some coffee or cake, Café Pause is the place to go. The café is somewhat hidden behind the Honigfabrik and seemed closed when I first arrived there. However, once inside, I found out that this café is a lively meeting place for everyone. You will find parents with children, students and retirees all drinking coffee and enjoying each other’s company.

Dinner

La Patina

Have you gotten hungry from your tour? Then this is the perfect time to sit down and enjoy a delicious pizza at La Patina. Located at the Veringstraße, the restaurant has a wide variety of pizza’s to offer, including vegetarian and vegan options. You can adjust your pizza to your taste by choosing between two types of crust, adding ingredients or even by putting it together all by yourself. If you want to enjoy the homely and relaxed atmosphere, you can enjoy the pizza at the restaurant. But if you would rather eat at home, you can use the restaurant’s delivery service or pick your pizza up yourself.

 

Aomame

If pizza is not your thing, visit Aomame for a taste of the Japanese kitchen. The small restaurant is open six days a week, from late afternoon to 10pm. It is easily accessible and located at the Veringstraße. The founders of the restaurant each have a strong connection to the Japanese culture and cuisine. Visit Aomame to enjoy dumplings, a poke bowl or some tasty ramen.

 

DRINKS

Turtur

During the winter months, Turtur functions as a club and is a good place to go out. Parties with different themes and genres keep visitors dancing all night. In May, as the summer season starts, Turtur transforms into a restaurant, with pizza, salads and drinks. Still, the bar remains and occasionally there are concerts. End your day discovering Wilhelmsburg with a drink at Turtur!
